New Faculty Appointments

The Department of History is pleased to announce the following faculty have joined the department:

Thomas Gallant (Ph.D., Cambridge University, UK, 1982; Professor and Nicholas Family Endowed Chair in Modern Greek History) specializes in modern Greek history with special interest in rural society and culture, crime and violence, masculinity and gender, cultural identity, colonial power and government, and the social history of the Mediterranean.

Cathy Gere (Ph.D., Cambridge University, UK, 2002; Assistant Professor) concentrates on biomedical ethics, and the history of medicine and the neurosciences.

Mark Hanna (Ph.D., Harvard University, 2006; Assistant Professor) specializes in early American history, with an emphasis on the Atlantic World, and early modern European history.

Notice to Employees

This notice is being provided as a result of our intention to file an application for permanent alien labor certification for the position of Associate Professor. The annual salary is $60,100. The duties involve teaching university students and conducting research in the field of history. A Ph.D. in history is required.

The United States and the World

The Department of History at the University of California at San Diego, (http://historyweb.ucsd.edu/), in conjunction with the Institute for International, Comparative, and Areas Studies at the University of California, San Diego, seeks applications for a tenure-track/tenured position in the history of the United States and the world. The department seeks to attract a broad and diverse pool of applicants to teach and conduct research in the field of United States’ relations with the wider world. Specific interests might include the history of imperialism, colonialism and anti-colonialism, foreign policy and diplomacy, human rights and international institutions, Cold War history, globalization, migration, or transnational social movements. Multilingual specialists in U.S. history, area studies, and allied fields are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will offer courses in both the department and in the International Studies Program.  The search is open to all ranks. Temporary Lecturers

The History department at the University of California at San Diego is establishing a pool of temporary lecturers in history. It especially encourages nomination and applications from the following fields: U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction, Women’s/Gender studies, Afro-American History, and Twentieth Century Japan. Appointments will likely be part-time, possibly full-time, from one quarter up to one year. Some of these positions may be renewable. Positions available beginning the 2007-08 academic year, contingent upon funding. Ph.D preferred; ABDs considered. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarship. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on published UC pay scales.
