Active Service-Modified Duties
This is not considered a leave but a modification of normal duties.
Intended Use: May be granted to an academic appointee with substantial responsibility for the care of a newborn. Can also apply to an adopted or foster child under the age of 5. Includes either partial or full relief from teaching.
Possible Duration: One or two quarters if combined with FMLA by the childbearer.
Restrictions/Constraints: Active Service-Modified Duties normally occurs within three months prior to twelve months following the birth or placement and is concluded within twelve months following the birth or placement. For Assistant Professors this will only stop the eighth year clock for a maximum of two years.

Catastrophic Leave Program
Generally Non-applicable to 9/12 Academic Faculty
Intended Use: This program permits salary and benefits continuation through donations of vacation leave hours from colleagues for serious illnesses or injuries, or to care for a serious ill member of the employee's family or household.
Possible Duration: N/A
Restrictions/Constraints: Only acaddemic appointees in vacation-accruing titles, and who have passed the requisite waiting period for vacation usage, are eligible to participate as donors or recipients

Childbearing Leave
To be granted on request to an academic appointee who bears a child, for the period prior to, during, and after childbirth
Intended Use: Under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), an academic appointee can take a childbearing leave ("pregnancy disability leave") for between 6 weeks and 4 months.
Possible Duration: 6 weeks to 4 months
Restrictions/Constraints: Leaves for childbirth and recovery normally will be for at least 6 weeks. Eligible academic appointees who do not accrue sick leave (due to title) and have served for 12 consecutive months can receive their approved base salary for up to 6 weeks.

Affect Benefits: Yes or No. Can affect service credits.
Require Use of Sabbatical Credits: No
Family and Medical Leave
With FMLA, eligible employees can receive up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave, a continuance of health plan coverage as if on pay, and reinstatement rights.
Intended Use: Eligible academic appointees are entitled to take unpaid leave or to substitute accrued vacation or accrued sick leave. (AFC Note: 9/12 Ladder/ranked faculty do not accrue sick leave or vacation time.) Per the Academic Personnel Manual the SVCAA may approve leave with pay as an exception.
Possible Duration: Up to 12 work weeks
Restrictions/Constraints: Leaves can be taken for: (a) the appointee's own serious health condition; (b) to care for the appointee's child, parent, spouse, or domestic partner (same sex or opposite sex) with a serious health condition; (c) to care for the appointee's newborn child or a child newly placed with the appointee for adoption or foster care.

Affect Benefits: No for medical, dental and vision; yes for service credits/retirement issues. It is advisable to contact your benefits representative.
