Professional Meeting
Intended Use: Academic appointees may request leaves with pay to attend professional meetings.
Possible Duration: 10 service days or less unless you apply to an Extended Leave
Restrictions/Constraints: Refer to Extended Leave policy for leave with pay greater than 10 service days

Extended Leave
Intended Use: Extended leaves are for academic-year faculty who want to take a leave for the purpose of doing research or attending research conferences that occur during the service period. Extended leaves with pay that are longer than 10 service days will require the forfeiture of sabbatical credits.
Possible Duration: More than 10 service days, but less than one quarter
Restrictions/Constraints: Leave without Pay can be taken instead of forfeiting sabbatical leave credit

Leave from Professional Duties to Conduct Research
A memo outlining the project, endorsed by the Department Chair, must be submitted to the cognizant Dean
Intended Use: This type of leave allows faculty members to take leaves from professional duties to focus exclusively on research. On these leaves, the faculty member is generally paid from grant funding under a research title for the duration of the leave. Note: No ALAS (Academic Leave of Absence/Sabbatical) is required when taken in residence.
Possible Duration: More than 10 service days require SVCAA approval
Restrictions/Constraints: An ALAS (Academic Leave of Absence/Sabbatical) is required when 1) the research is to be conducted at other than UCSD; or 2) during a temporary research quarter/leave/appointment at UCSD, the faculty member wishes to leave UCSD for more than seven calendar days.
