Sabbatical Leave (Normal)
Ladder rank faculty generally accrue 1 credit per service quarter. 9 credits are required to take one quarter of sabbatical leave at 100% benefits and salary.
Intended Use: Leaves intended for research. Require the forteiture of sabbatical credits. (AFC Note: Sabbatical credits cannot be considered a "pay out" if the faculty member leaves the university. Any outstanding credits would be forfeited.)
Possible Duration: Up to one year
Restrictions/Constraints: A sabbatical research plan must be submitted with the appropriate forms. After the leave a sabbatical report must be submitted to the department chair within 90 days. Sabbaticals can be taken as various percentages.

Sabbatical Leave (In Residence)

Intended Use: Same purpose as a normal sabbatical, but teaching is required.
Possible Duration: Up to one year
Restrictions/Constraints: This type of leave requires less sabbatical credits (uses 6 credits for 1 academic quarter at 100% pay/benefits), but only exempts faculty from administrative, university, and/or department service
Affect Pay: No (unless taken at less than 100% pay)
Affect Benefits: Yes or No (depending on percentage of pay). Can affect service credits.
Require Use of Sabbatical Credits: Yes
Leave with Pay in Lieu of Sabbatical
Not applicable to 9/12 Academic Ladder-rank faculty
Intended Use: Faculty who are ineligible to accrue sabbatical credits due to their title code my be entitled to request a leave with pay in lieu of a sabbatical (if appropriate funding is available)
Possible Duration: Up to one year
Restrictions/Constraints: Eligibility to apply for this kind of leave is based on length of service. The policy for leave with pay in lieu of sabbatical is patterned after the sabbatical leave policy, except that credits are not accrued or deferred.
