Welcome to the European Studies Minor!

The European Studies undergraduate minor is a brand new program at UCSD for students interested in all things European.

UCSD offers unparalleled opportunities to study in an interdisciplinary framework a dynamic, multicultural region that is undergoing major upheavals with over 100 faculty in a variety of humanities and social science departments. (See list of courses offered).

What adds to Europe's importance today is the dramatic debate over where Europe begins and ends, which has generated heated discussion about European as well as national identity. It has centered on such issues as:

  • the expansion of the European Union and its role as a new economic and political power
  • the legacy of the European Enlightenment
  • the rise of non-European immigration
  • the historical presence of Islam in Europe
  • the European Constitution
  • the politics of fear, terror, and democracy
  • new forms of communication and artistic expression
  • U.S.-European relations

Discussion of these subjects and many more touches on the most crucial social, cultural, and political issues of the emerging global order of the 21st century.

The European Studies Minor will help provide a basic expertise in the region, including transnational courses that consider the region as a whole as well as courses focusing on individual nations and national cultures and linguistic traditions.

The European Studies Minor is ideal for students who

  • plan to study in Europe on an EAP or OAP program
  • have strong European interests
  • are thinking about working in Europe
  • who seek to complement their major with the study of Europe as a political, cultural, and economic entity
  • who are entertaining a career in foreign service, international non-governmental organizations, law, biomedical research, medicine, or business

To receive a minor in European Studies, a student must complete seven four-unit courses (twenty-eight units). For basic requirements go here.
