The Growth of a Leaf and a Life

The speaker is Alice B. Hayes, President of the University of San Diego and a respected biologist.

Her talk is called “The Growth of a Leaf and a Life.” From her unique perspective as both scientist and leader of a Catholic institution of higher education, she used the leaf as metaphor for the personal and professional growth of a scientist and expanded it to discuss biological patterns of growth that also apply to the process of living productive lives in society.

President Alice B. Hayes came to USD in July 1995 from Saint Louis University, where she was executive vice president, provost and a professor of biology. She joined Saint Louis University in 1989 after 27 years at Loyola University of Chicago, where she served as vice president for academic affairs (1987-89), associate academic vice president (1980-87), dean for natural sciences (1977-87) and chairperson of the department of natural science (1969-77). From 1960 to 1962, Hayes conducted mycology research for the Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium.

A biologist with a Ph.D. in biological sciences from Northwestern University, where she was a National Science Foundation Fellow, Hayes has published numerous books and articles on the natural sciences and on Catholic higher education. She has been a member of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Space Biology Program and served on advisory panels of the National Science Foundation.

Hayes is a member of the board of trustees of the Pulitzer Publishing Co., the Old Globe Theatre, the San Diego Historical Society and Catholic Charities.
