The Lecturer:

Mary Evelyn Tucker, a leading scholar in the new interdisciplinary field of Religion and Ecology, is Senior Lecturer and Research Scholar at Yale University, where she has appointments in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies as well as the Divinity School and the Department of Religious Studies.   She and her husband, John Grim, direct the Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale.  Her special area of study is Asian religions.  She received her Ph.D from Columbia University in Japanese Confucianism.  Since 1997 she has been a Research Associate at the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard.  Her Confucian publications include Moral and Spiritual Cultivation in Japanese Neo-Confucianism (SUNY, 1989), The Philosophy of Qi (Columbia UP, 2007), and Confucian Spirituality, which she edited with Tu Weiming (Crossroad, 2003-4).

Her concern for the growing environmental crisis led her to organize with John Grim a series of ten conferences on World Religions and Ecology at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard (1995-1998), resulting in ten volumes distributed by Harvard UP.  In this series she co-edited Buddhism and Ecology (1997), Confucianism and Ecology (1998), and Hinduism and Ecology (2000).   After the conference she and Grim founded the Forum on Religion and Ecology at a culminating conference at the United Nations in 1998.  To help shape this new field they edited Worldviews and Ecology (Orbis, 1994) and a Daedalus volume titled Religion and Ecology: Can the Climate Change?  (2001). Tucker also wrote Worldly Wonder: Religions Enter Their Ecological Phase (Open Court Press, 2014).  She is the co-creator of the Emmy award-winning documentary film Journey of the Universe (2011; 56 minutes), which may be viewed from Oct 6 through Oct 30 on the Burke Lectureship website: burkelecture.ucsd.edu.

The Lecture Series:

The Burke Lectureship has since 1985 sponsored a permanent, major series of free public lectures by distinguished scholars, authors, and leaders from various religious traditions who speak on the religious dimensions of being human and how religion interacts with society. The speakers visit the campus for one or more days of teaching and exchange with faculty, students, and interested members of the community.

• Make the second left onto Pangea Drive.
